The relevant regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on October 9, 2024. The new Regulation (EU) 2024\/2619 concerns aluminum fosetyl, potassium phosphonate, and disodium phosphonate and amends Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No. 396\/2005. Phosphonates are found in various plant protection products and fertilizers and also constitute historical contamination. The residue definition has been amended to take into account residues from both plant protection products and other sources. Individual fosetyl findings in food will no longer be taken into account in the future. The new maximum residue levels (MRLs) vary depending on the type of product and matrix. The lowest reporting limit is 1.5 mg\/kg, while for difficult matrices such as tea and spices it is 20 mg\/kg. The highest MRLs are found in herbal teas and some nuts. The regulation will enter into force on October 29, 2024, and will apply from April 29, 2025.
