In a recent communication No. 050\/2024 dated November 6, 2024, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) addresses the retention time of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the human body. The study shows that four long-chain PFAS compounds in particular are detectable in food and drinking water and have very long retention times. In contrast, short-chain PFAS are excreted more quickly and have a half-life of days to weeks. The length of the molecule's carbon chain is decisive for the retention time. These findings have led to differentiated calls for further PFAS bans by \u00d6KO-Test and NGOs.<\/p>
