The amended “Guidelines for vegan and vegetarian foods similar to foods of animal origin” were published in the Federal Gazette on October 9, 2024. This revision, announced in the status report of August 5, 2024, aims to clarify and specify the scope of application and the labeling concept for vegan and vegetarian foods. A list of currently common “replacement ingredients and base ingredients” and a description of sensory criteria for assessing similarity have been added. The principle that the more similar an alternative food is to the reference food, the closer its designation can be to that of the reference food has been specified. Examples of ‘common’ and “uncommon references” have been updated. The “Guidelines for sensory testing of vegan and vegetarian foods” will be revised in the near future to reflect the amended guidelines.
