The European Commission is currently working on harmonising voluntary allergen labelling (Precautionary Allergen Labelling, or PAL) across the EU. This covers unintentional allergen contamination, which is known in this country primarily as ‘traces’ labelling (‘May contain traces of xy’). The aim is to establish uniform guidelines for the labelling of potential unintentional allergen traces in order to better inform consumers and ensure a level playing field for food businesses. The planned implementing regulation is expected to be adopted in the fourth quarter of 2027.
