In response to a request from the Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has reviewed the tolerable upper intake levels (UL) for eight vitamins and minerals and updated the scientific framework for the risk assessment of nutrients. Following a public consultation phase and a two-year pilot phase, the final guidance document, “Guidance for establishing and applying tolerable upper intake levels for vitamins and essential minerals,” has now been published. Of particular relevance is Chapter 9, “Application of ULs to assess risks for individuals or populations,” which describes the modalities for applying the UL and supports risk managers in discussions on maximum levels.
