The EFSA has now considered 14 (instead of the usual 12) ergot alkaloids (ergotamine, ergocristine, ergocornine, ergometrine, ergosine, alpha- and beta-ergocryptine and the associated -inines) and concludes that the transfer of ergot alkaloids from feed to food of animal origin is negligible. The updated risk assessment is more concerned with the health effects in animals that have consumed feed contaminated with ergot alkaloids. This mainly concerns the livestock feed sector.
The dietary exposure of dogs and cats to ergot alkaloids through complete feed could not be deduced as insufficient data was available.
